TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR CHILD PROTECTION UNIT

The terms of reference have been prepared bearing in mind the prevailing moves towards the laws, policies, practices and attitudes regarding children in need of care and protection.

  • To create awareness to all LMPS members on child protection and offences pertaining to children.    
  • To sensitize members of the LMPS on fundamental Human Rights as well as children’s rights. 
  • To create public awareness on the needs of the children and services provided by the child unit. 
  • To respond appropriately and investigate promptly all cases involving children.    
  • To educate the community on family safety. 
  • To give advice in all matters affecting children in need of care.    
  • To coordinate, support and ensure full protection of children in police custody. 
  • To provide user-friendly reporting environment that will ensure confidentiality between child survivors and the police.    
  • To remove/receive and convey children in need of care to places of safety, halfway houses and centers of protection. 
  • To conduct child interviews in camera.    
  • To develop and review policies and procedures regarding children in need of care and those in conflict with the law. 
  • To develop assistance mechanism that will ensure protection of child survivors and perpetrators from intimidation, intrusion and retaliation. 
  • To collect, disseminate and exchange information and good practices on children with all stakeholders locally, regionally and internationally. 
  • To keep a profile, pattern analysis and all data regarding children in need of care and in conflict with the law countrywide. 
  • To provide feedback to child survivors about their cases and liaise with other agencies which will monitor change and attitudes. 
  • To develop the unit’s strategic plan. 
  • To provide interim counseling to victims/ survivors as well as perpetrators.

Some of the activities supported by CGPU to date:

  • Sensitization workshop for Regional and District commanders
  • Capability building workshop for CGPU personnel.
  • Development, Printing and Dissemination of the reference Guide for Lesotho Mounted Police Officers on the Protection of children and women.
  • Hosting of the 4th Interpol Specialist Group Meeting on violence against Women and Children in Southern Africa
  • Development, Printing and Dissemination of IEC Material- CGPU posters and pamphlets.
  • Specialized Training on Play Therapy and working with Sexual Abused Children.
  • Basic and Advanced Play Therapy
  • Development and roll out of database to the districts.
  • Periodic Monitoring and evaluation visits to the Districts
  • Stress Management Workshop
  • Sign Language
